Georeferencing allows adjacent maps to be accurately and automatically aligned within GIS systems. Mapping of different areas of the Dry Valleys and Ross Island was undertaken in the 1980s and 1990s. At this time, metadata for the source images of each area of mapping is not available 3. Contours and spot elevations in snow areas may be less accurate 4. The location of tracks on sea ice is subject to annual change 5. The existance of a road or track does not necessarily indicate permitted access 6. Ice shelf and sea extents are from differring data sources and dates 7. LINZ, in conjunction with the USGS, carried out mapping of the Dry Valleys area and Ross Island in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2007, LINZ expanded the mapping to include the Darwin/Hatherton Glacier region of Antarctica. The purpose of this is to support science taking place in the region as part of the Latitudinal Gradient Project. The data provided is based on ALOS PRISM satellite imagery taken during the 2006/07 season and is supplied in the Darwin Glacier Lambert Conformal Conic 2000 projection.
