The samples were collected as part of a broader research programme investigating how photosynthetic microorganisms inhabiting geothermal soils on Mount Erebus survive the annual polar winter, including prolonged periods of darkness. The Hut Cave samples represent a low-temperature site and were obtained to isolate and culture photosynthetic microorganisms present in these soils for subsequent laboratory study.
