    "description": "**CORRECTION NOTICE: 4 February 2025**\nTo ensure the accuracy of these data, Antarctica New Zealand completed a quality assurance process which found an error in the 2019 Cape Crozier West count which has been corrected. The previous count of 358031 has been corrected to 258031. Antarctica New Zealand regrets the error and apologises for any inconvenience caused.\n\nAerial reconnaissance and photography are used in the Ross Sea sector of Antarctica to determine the breeding locations of Ad\u00E9lie penguins and to count the numbers of nests occupied during the early incubation period. From 1981 to present (two-year embargo), all islands and sea coasts between 158\u00B0E and 175\u00B0E have been searched, and 11 previously unreported breeding colonies discovered.\n\nThe 2013 Cape Anne count includes an additional beach colony which was not included in previous counts.\n\nThe aim is to census Ad\u00E9lie (Pygoscelis adeliae) populations to provide basic data against which future population levels can be compared in order to monitor environmental change of the Antarctic Ocean ecosystem, both natural and man-induced.",
