Shades were installed on high- and medium-temperature cyanobacterial mats in November 2025 and removed after approximately three months to simulate the prolonged darkness of the Antarctic polar winter. The experiment was designed to test which, if any, photosynthetic microorganisms could survive three months of darkness, with control (unshaded) mats sampled concurrently. The dataset comprises 44 cyanobacterial mat and underlying soil samples collected from shaded and control sites for DNA and RNA analysis of microbial community composition and activity.
